Dawn Aronson 1953-1999

Personal Note from Christopher Hunt

Dawn grew up in Hillsborough with her parents and her elder brother Gregg, in a beautiful house designed by her architect father. She died in London, of complications from ‘flu, in December 1999, aged 46.

Besides her family and friends, and the design and photography that were the passions of her last years, I remember among what she loved in the seventeen years we were together: armadillos, dogs, raptors, charollais cows, the duck-billed platypus; the church of St. Philibert at Tournus; Delacroix, Andy Goldsworthy, Hiroshige, Kandinsky, Magritte, Morandi, Frank Stella, Vermeer; good Burgundy and old California Zinfandel; Bartók, Harrison Birtwistle, Handel, Messiaen, Mozart, Varèse; British street traffic-cones; Corbusier’s chapel at Ronchamp and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Falling Water; Edward Gorey’s The Uninvited Guest and Cellini’s Autobiography; John Banville, Diderot, Zbigniew Herbert, D. H. Lawrence, José Saramago, Schnitzler, Stendhal, Zamyatin; pancakes on Sunday morning at the Elite Cafe round the corner from our home on West 68th Street in New York; Bach cantatas; the choreography of William Forsythe, Jíří Kylian, and Mark Morris; cinnamon, dried Persian barberries, garam marsala, lime pickle, Mounds bars; the photographs of Alvarez-Bravo, Atget, Doisneau, Michael Kenna, Man Ray; Ninagawa’s production of King Lear; the sculpture of Tilman Riemenschneider, Claes Oldenburg, David Smith; PS122 in New York; the clothes of Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld, and Richard Tyler; and the beauty of Christy Turlington and Audrey Hepburn; Furtwängler’s conducting; the films of Buñuel and Wim Wenders; fog; the architecture of Calatrava, Isozaki, Neutra, Richard Meier; leftovers for breakfast; the statue of the Markgräfin Uta in Naumburg Cathedral; the voice of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and the playing of her friend Alfred Brendel; The Far Side and Ros Chast; the Frick Collection and the Burrell Collection; Robert the cat; opera, especially Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle… and London.
